2001 Space Odyssey : An awe inspiring movie?
2001 Space Odyssey is a science fiction classic created in 1968 and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Space Odyssey used many actors and orchestras to create the futuristic movie. Space Odyssey was a first of its kind, the first spoken word is almost a half hour into the film, and there's less than 40 minutes of dialogue in the entire film, so much of the film is dead silence. The movie stared Keir Dullea as Dr. Dave Bowman who was sent around to the space station. Throughout the movie many people may not pick up on it but, the movie was meant to inspire awe of the future more than entertain.
My first opinion of this film was boring. I couldn't stand quiet monkey noises and confusing plots that don't come into play later. This movie to me was nothing but stuff floating in space played along with classical music. This has been the case since it first came out. I did my research and found that most people did not like this film when it came out. Supporting my ideas is Roger Ebert from Chicago Sun-Times. He states "This is the work of an artist so sublimely confident that he doesn't include a single shot simply to keep our attention", is it how I felt while watching the movie from start to finish. At the beginning there was a big flat rock that inspired evolution of monkeys using tools and getting smarter. After this I couldn't follow the advanced plot about how the magic rock inspired evolution and how it somehow got on an uninhabited planet when humans live on a different planet. I have to assume that earth was uninhabitable in 2001 which we all know is not true since its 2009 now heh.
When watching the movie I did find something to laugh at although others may have not seen the humor in it since it was hard to pay attention. I loved how the actors playing the monkeys at the beginning played monkeys really well and there was some humor in how they beat up another monkey then ran away scared if it. Also many people would not pick up on this but, the bathroom had a list of rules about two pages long, this was also funny. If you want comedy in a movie you can almost find it in every movie you watch depending on the person. Jim Watters from Boxoffice Magazine had this to say, " 2001: A Space Odyssey is that this production is an overwhelming visual experience, supplemented by an imaginative use of all the divergent elements which go into filmmaking", some critics and people who love artistic films would like this movie but other all the average person thinks of this film is mediocre.
In conclusion the move 2001 A Space Odyssey had its good and bad moments, bad out weighing the good in my opinion. There are many people who do like this movie how ever so if there is to be any reason to question what I have stated please go see the movie and see if it's to your liking or disliking.

I think your paper was really good Thomas!!! Sounds very educated!! I like the quote you brought to the paper! I also agree with it being boring but the monkey parts were rather funny! Good paper.
ReplyDeleteYou have a good draft here, and you've brought in some good quotes. You'll also need to briefly summarize the plot so readers who haven't seen it can follow your evaluation. Watch the flash presentation at www.kubrick2001.com to help you with this.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, people still live on earth in the film. It might be a different monolith on the moon--or the same one that has been moved there.
Your judgment at the end needs to be more specific. What was good and what was bad?
You still have some editing and polishing to do to make this a great essay
You have some good qoutes which addes credibility to your paper.I felt as if I watched the movie while reading your paper. You have to work on your grammar though. Other than that everything is fine
ReplyDeleteI also need to tell you that in your conclusion you need to restate what was good and bad about the movie. Not just say that it was good. You have to paraphrase again why it was good or bad.
